*Attracting Hummingbirds To your Backyard!

There are 338 species of Hummingbirds around the world. There are over 16 kinds of Hummingbirds in the United States. The most prevalent by far is the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird. In fact, the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is the most widely distributed Hummingbird of the world.

The Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is often found between woodland and meadow, but only if they can find food and shelter, and if they can't, they are frequently spotted in backyards, in wooded parks, and around farms. The Ruby-Throated Hummingbird has adapted well to human development.  The best methods to Attract Hummingbirds to your yard are to provide Food, Help for Nesting, and water misters for them to fly through.

*Food for your hummingbirds:
A hummingbird that feeds in your yard will return to that same feeder year after year. Hummingbirds are very loyal to feeding sites they find. A male Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is very territorial, so the secret to attracting many more hummingbirds is to offer lots of feeders. But, the most important rule is to keep the feeder clean and the nectar fresh. If a hummingbird gets a taste of fermented nectar from your feeder, it will most likely leave the offending feeder for good.

*Nesting material for your hummingbirds:
A hummingbird nest is typically very hard to see as it blends in with the branch it is attached to and not much bigger than a quarter, and often just contains 2-3 eggs about the size of small peas. A hummingbird nest is made of plant or animal down and moss or lichens. If nesting material is in short supply in your area hummingbirds have been proven to really take to a product called “Hummer Helper”  which is a natural replacement for hard to find Nesting Material.

*Water for your humming birds:
Hummingbirds need and are attracted to water. One of the best ways to attract hummingbirds is with a “mister” that emits a fine spray of water. There are water misters that you attach to a hose and you can watch the hummers zip through the mist.

Hummingbirds are a thrill to watch!
