Attracting Purple Martins

Mid January is when purple martins began their yearly migration through North America. Purple martins will travel the same migration paths every year. Creating a backyard habitat for purple martins is very different than for many other birds. Purple Martins are the largest swallow in North America and they will colonize with other purple martins, and then return to their same nesting and roosting sites every year thereafter.

Purple Martins will build nests made of twigs and leaves within a bird house or other cavities to their liking and they are considered secondary nesters. Since purple martins prefer to live in colonies with other purple martins they choose to live in houses that hold up to 28 families, depending on the size of the house provided to them. Purple martins are highly entertaining and are an integrel part of controlling mosquitos and other insects. For this reason, humans have always welcomed purple martins to live nearby by providing housing and nesting cavities that martins are unable to provide for themselves.
